The mostly small-sized producers in this area of about 7.60 km2 (2.93 sq mi) produce red wines. As in the neighbouring appellation of Saint-Émilion, the predominant grape variety is Merlot, often with Cabernet Franc and smaller quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon. Unlike other Bordeaux regions, Pomerol has no official wine ranking or classification.

However, wines like Château Pétrus and Château Le Pin are priced as high as the classified first growths of the Pauillac and Saint-Émilion such as Château Ausone and Château Cheval Blanc.

The next-door and slightly larger "satellite" appellation of Lalande-de-Pomerol produces similar wines which are shorter-lived and less expensive.

There are but a few producers in the whole of France that you could call synonymous with Pomerol name. The Moueix family own and look after one of the most incredible estates in the world and their impact upon the reputation of this right-bank commune is second to none.

This stunning merlot-dominated blend draws you in with gorgeous notes of violets, coffe, spice and liquorice. A wonderfully long and savoury finish with excellent tannic structure and acidity makes this one fantastic at any time of day, but better with a sunday roast!
