Gewürztraminer is an aromatic wine grape variety, used in white wines, and performs best in cooler climates. The variety has an high natural sugar and the wines are white and usually off-dry, with a characteristic bouquet of lychees. Indeed, Gewürztraminer and lychees share the same aroma compounds. Dry Gewürztraminers may also have aromas of roses, passion fruit and floral notes.

Gewürztraminer reaches its finest expression in Alsace, where it is the second most planted grape variety and the one most characteristic of the region. It grows better in the south of the region.

The Hugel Family's Gewürztraminer Classic  is made exclusively from hand harvested grapes from predominantly clay and limestone vineyards, in a dozen of the most favored localities in and around Riquewihr.  The climate here is mild, and generally warm and temperate. Riquewihr has a significant amount of rainfall during the year.
